The Atlanta BEST Academy Polo Team, the nation’s first all-Black high school polo team, made its historic competition debut during the 8th Annual Atlanta Polo Party at the 2025 Soul Symphony Weekend.

Led by students Caleb Choice-Sanchez, Syncere Poole, Declan Fitzpatrick, Ryland Hammond, Mikel Banks and Quinn Ramsey, the team secured a 4-3 victory over the Starr Creek Polo Club of Cumming, Georgia, according to a news release received by Blavity.

The team was founded just two years ago for students with no prior experience in polo or horseback riding. The initiative was co-founded by celebrity fashion designer Miguel Wilson through his Ride to the Olympics Foundation, in partnership with the 100 Black Men of Atlanta and BEST Academy.

“We are making history, and these young men are blazing a trail that we hope others will follow,” Wilson said, according to the news release. “For too long, a socioeconomic barrier has kept most Black people from participating in polo and other equestrian sports. My foundation was created to dismantle that barrier, providing these students with access to the skills and opportunities that come with it. It’s about more than just a game; it’s about leveling the playing field.”

Top politicians and celebrities attended the fundraising event

Wilson’s foundation funds the team, covering the costs of training lessons, horse rentals, equipment and uniforms. Fundraising events, such as Soul Symphony Weekend, also help support the program.

The event drew prominent figures, including Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and celebrities such as Egypt Sherrod, Mike Jackson, Dr. Heavenly Kimes, and Monyetta Shaw. Actors Clifton Powell, Palmer Williams and Rob Riley also attended, alongside musicians Kevin Ross, Pastor Troy and Q Parker.

Wilson first made history in 2019 by co-founding the Morehouse Polo Club, the first polo team established at a historically Black college and university, Blavity reported. His ongoing mission is to expand youth polo programs nationwide in order to ensure that Black students gain the experience and opportunities in the sport.

BEST Academy’s principal speaks out about the initiative

Robert Williams, principal of BEST Academy, praised the initiative for transforming students into leaders.

“When the opportunity presented itself, and along with the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, we were excited about the opportunity and wanted to join with Miguel Wilson to create this wonderful event. The students have grown as leaders on campus and have really strived for excellence both on the field and off,” Williams said, per the news release statement.

Proceeds from the Soul Symphony Weekend will support the Ride to the Olympics Foundation, which will continue to support the Atlanta BEST Academy Polo Team and help launch other Black teams nationwide.
